3. Your Drive is Hour Drive

Hillel Social Justice invites you to join our first ever Volunteer Hour Drive!

Over the Fall Semester we will be counting the collective hours the Hillel community volunteers as a way of recognizing, celebrating and encouraging the impact we can have on our local community.  Volunteerism is a deeply meaningful experience with the potential to make big changes.  Pirkei Avot (Ethics of Our Ancestors) teaches “It is not your duty to complete the work; neither are you free to desist from it.” Every hour counts- please join us!

If you volunteer already, please register your hours to receive a free t-shirt here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=WOkTJIm1OmI_2bf1hkSaNjRA_3d_3d

If you would like to learn about more volunteer opportunities, one-time or standing commitments, please email amyyschultz@gmail.com for more information.

4. Legacy, Memory, History: In Rwanda

Tuesday, October 20th at 7pm in Lerner Cinema

Join Taylor Krauss, founder of Voices of Rwanda, and Eugenie Mukeshimana for a film screening and moderated conversation.

What is the legacy of a genocide? What is the effect of a filmed testimony? How does one capture stories of suffering and survival, and *what might they leave us with for the future? Voices of Rwanda is a non-profit organization dedicated to recording and preserving testimonies of Rwandans, and to ensuring that their stories inform the world about genocide and inspire a global sense of responsibility to prevent human rights atrocities.*

This event is is cosponsored by Hillel, Global Solutions, African Students Association, Muslim Students Association, BOSS, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Veritas Forum, Black Students Organizations and Columbia College Democrats

5. Interfaith Student Leader Day-Long Retreat 2009

Friday, October 23rd, 9:00am-5:00pm

Application Deadline- 5pm, Tuesday, October 20th

About the Retreat

The Interfaith Student Leader Retreat is a new programming endeavor between the Office of Student Group Advising (OSGA), the Office of the University Chaplain (OUC) and Columbia/Barnard Hillel. We have created this new leadership retreat specifically geared toward our religious community student leaders to support the burgeoning interfaith community at Columbia. It is our sincerest hope that this day-long retreat will bring together student leaders of different faiths to find their commonalities and celebrate their differences, while tackling tough issues that currently face our University community.

We have invited key University staff to assist with the facilitation of the retreat and provide support for the student participants. The day-long retreat will take place at a loft space in the heart of historic Harlem on Friday, October 23rd. Students are asked travel together on public transportation and arrive for breakfast at 9:00am. In order to participate, we ask that you commit to the entire day. Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided and we can accommodate any dietary needs. If you require special dietary accommodation, please complete the appropriate information on the application.

Please note the loft space is located on the third floor of a walk-up building. Please email Jason Anthony at jla2108@columbia.edu if you have any access accommodation requests.
