The weather is finally warming up and things are really hot at Hillel! Next week is Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Memorial Day) and Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Israel Independance Day). We are honored to have Faye Schulman, a former Jewish Partisan who documented her experience in the war through photographs come speak with us about her experiences on Yom HaZikaron (Tuesday, April 28 at 7:30pm). This event also marks the closing of Schulman's photography exhibit, "Pictures of Resistance: The Wartime Photography of Jewish Partisan Faye Schulman," which has been on display here at the Kraft Center. Please join us for this special and one-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

1) Yom HaZikaron Ceremony- Featuring Faye Schulman
Where: Rennert Hall, Basement of Hillel (606 West 115 Street)
When: Tuesday, April 28, 7:30-8:30
Yom HaZikaron is Israeli Memorial Day. The Israel Va'ad invites you to a ceremony remembering those who sacrificed for the existence of the State of Israel and the perpetuation of Jewish self-rule. We are honored to announce that the event will include a keynote address by Faye Schulman, a Jewish Partisan who bravely resisted during the Holocaust. Her amazing photographs are on display in Rennert Hall, and you won't want to miss this opportunity to hear her speak.
2) National Jewish Student Journalism Conference
Want to write about Jewish issues? Come learn from the best at the National Jewish Student Journalism Conference on May 3rd in New York City. Presented by New Voices Magazine and the Jewish Student Press Service and hosted by Avanim, the literary journal of Columbia/Barnard Hillel, the conference features workshops and panels on campus Jewish publications, writing on Israel, and more. It will be held at the Kraft Center for Jewish Life in Manhattan, 606 W. 115th St.
Past conferences have featured presentations by Ethan Bronner and Clyde Haberman of The New York Times, Alana Newhouse of nextbook, J.J. Goldberg of The Forward, Josh Friedman and Sam Freedman of the Columbia Journalism School, Esther Kaplan and Ari Berman of The Nation, and Daniel Sieradski of jewschool.com and the JTA, and Nathan Glazer of Harvard University.
The conference will begin with an informal post-shabbat event on Sat. night, May 2 and will be held all day (9am-9:30pm) Sunday, May 3rd. It will include panel discussions and skills sessions led by prominent writers and journalists.

4) A Sexy Shabbat: Intersections of Judaism and Sexuality
THIS Friday April 24, 7:30 - 9:30 PM, Lerner Roone Arledge Auditorium
Gayava, Kesher, and the Progressive Jewish Alliance Present: A communal Shabbat dinner with kosher vegetarian Indian food, and space to talk about various Jewish perspectives on sexuality and sexual health with the Jewish community and some invited guests. Is sex political to you? Does an engagement with sexuality tap into your spirituality? Do you have strong feelings about sexual health an education? We will be talking about issues surrounding sexuality, sex and sexual health from political, spiritual and educational perspectives. Come, join, listen, discuss, learn and connect!

5) Hillel Social Justice Brunch with TOMS SHOES
On Sunday, April 26, TOMS SHOES will be joining Hillel Social Justice for brunch! Come eat bagels as TOMS SHOES Vagabonds screen their documentary and raise awareness about a complex problem with a simple solution.

A free showing of "The Case For Israel: Democracy's Outpost." A feature length documentary with Alan Dershowitz
Sunday, April 26 at 7pm at the Kraft Center
Harvard Law School Professor Alan Dershowitz presents a vigorous case for Israel – for its basic right to exist, to protect its citizens from terrorism, and to defend its borders from hostile enemies. He engages leading political,judicial and academic leaders from Israel and North America in objective and intelligent discourse on the critical challenges facing Israel and the West.

"Biblical Slavery: Reconciling Ancient Scripture with Modern Morality"
An INTERFAITH TEXT STUDY EVENT sponsored by the Veritas Forum and the Hillel Interfaith Intercultural Committee
How can the Bible both set a moral standard for its adherents and condone slavery?
Are Jewish and Christian anti-slavery advocates just glossing over the parts of the Bible they don’t like?
Is biblical morality inflexible, constantly evolving, or is it all relative?
Come enjoy a FREE DINNER and delve into these difficult but important questions

Get pumped for Hillel's awesome Beach Party! It's in honor of Israeli Independence Day and Tel Aviv's 100th anniversary! There will be performances by CU Bhangra, Pizmon, and Shalhevet; free giveaways, like Israeli flip-flops; and of course a ton of amazing free food, including falafel, hummus, and all your favorite Israeli snacks.
9) Interfaith in Action: Dinner For Doers
Join Interfaith in Action for our annual Dinner For Doers! Many religions have a strong commitment to community service and social justice. During this very special evening, we will break bread together and speak about the economic crisis and its effect on poverty and social justice, and our roles in our own communities and in the world.

Respecting Ourselves and Others Through Education (ROOTEd) is a student-run facilitation group under the Office of Multicultural Affairs that explores identity, power, privilege, and intersectionality in our lives. We are looking for new facilitators to add to the group for the upcoming semester!

A conversation with PAUL AUSTER, acclaimed novelist, essayist and translator. His many works include The New York Trilogy, Moon Palace, The Brooklyn Follies and, most recently, Man in the Dark. Moderated by Mark C. Taylor, Chair of the Department of Religion and Co-Director of the Institute for Religion, Culture and Public Life.
