Interested in helping to plan Hillel's Yom HaZikaron ceremony? Yom HaZikaron is Israel's memorial day, when we come together to remember those soldiers who gave their lives fighting for Israel. This year, Hillel's ceremony will be on the evening of April 28 in Rennert Hall (606 W 115 Street). If you are interested in helping to plan this important event or want to participate, please e-mail Brandon Hammer, our Israel Coordinator, at

How does sexual assault affect the Jewish community? How can we as a community be more supportive of survivors among us? What gets in the way? How can we empower ourselves? Come to a conversation facilitated by a peer educator from the Rape Crisis/Anti Violence Support Center who is a member of our communit and a Hillel staff member.
Tuesday, March 24th

7) Free showing of Faces of Israel Comes to Campus!
When: Wednesday, March 25, 9 pm
Where: Satow Room, Lerner Hall
Join the Israel Vaad, Religious Life Vaad and Wednesday Night Learning Program as we see the fascinating documentary Faces of Israel: A Discussion About Marriage, State and Religion in the Jewish Homeland. The film has received acclaim from a diverse range of Jewish leaders, and  poses a series of questions about what it means to live in both a Jewish and democratic state.   A discussion will follow.  Check out the trailer at
www.facesthemovie.com .

8) Interfaith in Action CCO
Every year, different student groups create their own group for Columbia Community Outreach. Now there's a new and exciting way to be a part of this very special day. Join Interfaith in Action's group, and be a part of a group with students of many different faiths. In addition to volunteering with the rest of the Columbia community, we will have a very special discussion led by a member from interfaith collective. Go to
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/outreach/register.html to register, and choose interfaith in action!
The day begins on Low Plaza on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 9:00am. Volunteers check in, get a volunteer t-shirt and eat breakfast. At 10:00 there is an opening ceremony with public speakers and school officials. In 2007, our keynote speakers were Congressman Charles B. Rangel and City Councilwoman Melisa Mark Viverito, CC '90. Once the ceremony has ended volunteers are sent out to various service projects throughout New York arranged by the CCO members. All volunteers are given bagged lunches, Metrocards for traveling, and any supplies they will need for the project site. The day is spent working at volunteer sites, and at the end of the day, when they return to campus, CCO provides pizza, drinks and ice cream for all the volunteers who participated.
