Come enjoy (free!) coffee/tea/desserts in the lovely atmosphere of Cafe Nana while listening to the literary stylings of your fellow students.

5) Great Class! One America: Israeli, One American: The Writing of Etgar Keret and Nathan Englander
We’ll be looking at the insightful, moving and sometimes eccentric writings of two young Jewish writers-Israeli Etgar Keret (The Nimrod Flip Out, The Bus Driver Who Wanted to be Gd) and American Nathan Englander (For the Relief of Unbearable Urges, The Ministry of Special Cases.) Both have fascinating views on what it means to be Jewish, both are deeply affected by war, nationalism, identity and culture.
In our first session, we’ll look at Keret’s (very short) fiction and talk about what experiences we bring to the texts and how they impact our relationship with Israel and with our Judaism.
Come to both sessions or just one. EVERYONE is welcome!
Sunday, November 16th, 1.00-2.30 pm, Bishop library in the Kraft Center.
6) Holla for Challah - Free Challah Baking Class
Learn how to bake challah from scratch on Friday, November 14th at 11 AM. Join us as we start off our weekend on a wonderful note! The class is BYOB, bring your own bowl, so just bring yourself and your big bowl, and you will be set to go! Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP to Sarah at culted@hillel.columbia.edu. See all you bakers on Friday!

At 4:30pm we will transition into a Conservative style Kabbalat Shabbat without guitar, which will be followed by a D'var Torah by the Interdenominational Comittee's very own Marley Weiner. Services will conclude with an Orthodox style Ma'ariv service. There will be three seating areas (non-gender specific, male, and female) to accommodate the various needs of the greater community. Prayer booklets with translations, transliteration, and explanation will be available. If you have any questions regarding specifics of the service please feel free to contact a member of the Interdenominational Committee. This service will be a great opportunity for students from various Jewish backgrounds to come together and share a Shabbat experience.

Israel has TONS of organizations that do this type of work and more. Come to the Social Justice in Israel Fair and find out about social justice organizations in Israel who you can work or volunteer for, in paid or unpaid internships. Ask representatives how you can get involved, and hear Sivan Borowich, founder of Jewish Heart for Africa, talk about the importance of Social Justice to Israeli society.
