1) Hillel Elections!
For all students interested in running and/or applying for Hillel Executive Board positions, there will be a MANDATORY interest meeting on Sunday, November 16 at 7:30pm in Room 400 of the Kraft Center.  If you have any questions about the elections process, please contact us at
elections@hillel.columbia.edu.  Be on the lookout for another announcement with more details about each Executive Board position.

2) New Classes this week at Hillel
This week, Hillel kicks off its second round of 4-week classes! These classes are completely free and are a great way to learn about unique and interesting topics without overloading your schedule! Just to highlight some sweet classes, we are offering classes like "Understanding Shabbat Services" and "Starbucks and Spirituality." Check below for a full description of all the classes! If you miss the first class, not to worry, you can drop by for the second, third, and/or fourth class!

3) First Year Fall Fest
Hang out around a bonfire, eat S'mores, drink hot chocolate and catch up with your friends!

4) Free Chagall Exhibit Tour
Ever wonder what all those green goats and flying people are supposed to mean in Chagall's art?  Wonder what made a Jewish artist from a Hasidic background become one of the most prolific Crucifixion painters of the modern era? Come on an informal, guided tour of the Museum of Biblical Art's new exhibition, "Chagall's Bible:  Mystical Storytelling" with Dr. Aaron Rosen, the new post-doctoral fellow at Columbia's Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies.

Sunday, November 9. Meet in the Hillel lobby (606 W. 115th between Broadway and Riverside) @ 3:15 PM on Nov. 9 to take the subway to Museum, or meet at Museum (Broadway at 61st) @ 4:00 PM.  To RSVP email Marnina@hillel.columbia.edu - we just need to know if you are coming so we will wait for you!

5) Save a Child's Heart Event – Sunday, November 9th

Save a Child's Heart is an organization that sends medical representatives around the world to perform extensive pediatric heart surgery for children,  regardless of race, ethnicity, religion. The organization  sends representatives to developing countries, brings children to Israel, arranges  heart surgery for them, and provides a place for recuperation for 6 months. In addition, the organization also trains people from these developing countries to perform medical procedures on their own.

6) Holla for Challah - Free Challah Baking Class at Hillel
Learn how to bake challah from scratch on Friday, November 14th at 11 AM. Join us as we start off our weekend on a wonderful note! The class is BYOB, bring your own bowl, so just bring yourself and your big bowl, and you will be set to go! Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP to Sarah at

7) Interdenominational Shabbat Services next Friday Night, November 14th! 
Next Friday Night, November 14th, the Hillel Interdenominational Committee will be hosting Interdenominational Shabbat Services.  The services will commence at 4pm in the Earl Hall Auditorium with a Reform style Kabbalat Shabbat with guitar accompaniment.  At 4:30pm we will transition into a Conservative style Kabbalat Shabbat without guitar, which will be followed by a D'var Torah by the Interdenominational Comittee's very own Marley Weiner.  Services will conclude with an Orthodox style Ma'ariv service.  There will be three seating areas (non-gender specific, male, and female) to accommodate the various needs of the greater community.  Prayer booklets with translations, transliteration, and explanation will be available.  If you have any questions regarding specifics of the service please feel free to contact a member of the Interdenominational Committee.This service will be a great opportunity for students from various Jewish backgrounds to come together and share a Shabbat experience.

8) Hillel Presents DeLeon in Concert
On Sunday, November 23, Hillel is bring an emerging new indie group from Israel to Columbia - DeLeon! DeLeon has an amazing beat and is fantastic in show. Visit their myspace page to hear their unique music!

9) Guatemala for Spring Break?

11) Panel Discussion - The Student Struggle For Soviet Jewry
Do you want to hear to about how Columbia students were involved in the student struggle for Russian Jewry? Come join us for educational evening with author Phil Spiegel, our own Executive Director Simon Klarfeld, and maybe even Hillel board members and alumni. Wednesday, November 19 in Room 400 at 6:30

12) First Year Dinner
