2) Sukkah Study Break!
Come join your friends from Koach and Kesher to celebrate Sukkot with a study break in the Sukkah. We will be building sukkot (sukkahs) out of food, eating candy, and saying the blessings over the lulav and etrog. It will be an awesome time to eat sweet food, see friends, and practice some of our oldest traditions. October 15th, 8pm, Barnard Sukkah
3) Special Shabbat Outing – this Friday!
Join Benjamin and first year students on a Friday night field trip to Kol Zimrah.
Kol Zimrah is an independent Jewish community composed of participants from a wide range of Jewish backgrounds. Their services include the full kabbalat shabbat and maariv liturgy and are filled with exuberant harmony accompanied by acoustic guitar and percussion.
If you’re interested in staying after services with Benjamin, Kol Zimrah has a "two table" potluck—vegetarian and/or kosher food accepted. Check out their website for all the facts: http://kolzimrah.info/nyc/
Benjamin will be leading a walking group down to Kol Zimrah at 5:45pm (meet in the Kraft Lobby), and there will be a subway group leaving at 6pm (also meeting in Kraft lobby). For more info contact benjamin@hillel.columbia.edu.
(Kol Zimrah services are held at St. Matthew & St. Timothy - 26 West 84th Street.)
4) Spring break in New Orleans with the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Hillel - Deadline Approaching!
Columbia/Barnard Hillel offers a fabulous Alternative Spring Break trip to New Orleans together with OMA.
Do you want to:
- Go to New Orleans over Spring Break?
- Become involved in efforts to re-build and stabilize New Orleans?
- Travel with a diverse group of CU/BC students?
- Explore questions of social justice and activism?
If the answer is yes, visit http://www.hillel.columbia.edu/asbnola2008.doc. Application deadline is October 15th!
5) Avanim Submission Deadline – October 19th
Avanim, Hillel's literary magazine, is looking for excellent writing and excellent art for our Fall 2008 issue. Jewish themed stuff is wonderful. We publish poetry, prose, and short fiction under 800 words. We accept art in all media, and we would be happy to photograph any artwork not already in printable format. You can view our most recent issue at www.hillel.columbia.edu/avanim2008.pdf to give you an idea of what we're looking for and to provide some inspiration.
Send all writing as Word attachments. Any images should simply be attached to the email as well. Include your name, email where you can be reached, and Columbia affiliation in the body of the email.
Please send fall submissions (or any questions concerning submitting) to avanim.magazine@gmail.com by October 19. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!
