1) Register NOW for a FREE trip to Israel! Spots are limited!
Join other Columbia/Barnard students for a 10-day trip to Israel this winter break with Hillel!

Go to http://www.hillel.org/israel/travel/bri_hillel/trip_options/explore_trip.htm and select the "Campus Explore Israel Trip" to register.

Register now - registration closes in a week (October 3)! Contact Benjamin (benjamin@hillel.columbia.edu) for more information.

2) High Holiday Information

High Holidays are almost here!

Rosh Hashana:  begins at sundown on Monday, September 29th.

Yom Kippur:  begins at sundown on Wednesday, October 8th.

Let us know what kind of services and holiday meals you are looking for, and we'll help you find them!  You can check out our website (www.hillel.columbia.edu) for more information on which services and meals are being offered here at Columbia/Barnard Hillel.  And for details on what’s available in the local community, come to the Kraft Center (606 W. 115th Street) between 9:00am-5:00pm and ask for more information.

Want to join us for a FREE Rosh Hashana dinner on the evening of September 29th?  Or a pre-fast meal before Yom Kippur on October 8th?  See http://www.hillel.columbia.edu/template.php?name=hhmain for details and for sign up info.

Questions?  Email rabbi@hillel.columbia.edu.

3) Art and Social Justice Opportunity

Do you love art?  Working with kids? Take advantage of this great social action opportunity!

We will teach pediatric patients at New York Presbyterian Hospital how to create stencils in order to tag and personalize their wheelchairs. This fantastic project is available for Columbia/Barnard/JTS students, who will help facilitate the workshop. You do not need to have attended the first part of the program to visit the hospital! All are welcome.

To sign up for this exciting program, email Chanel at cd2303@columbia.edu.  Spots are limited!   It will take place on Friday, September 26th.  We’re beholden to the hospital in terms of time, so the program will begin at noon and last for about an hour; it depends on what the kids are up for. Please plan on meeting at Hillel at 10:30 so we can all go together.

4) Come As You Are: Friday Night Dinner for First Years!

The first of the monthly first year dinners is coming up soon! Friday, October 3rd, 7:30pm, join Benjamin and other 2012ers for a free, friendly, Friday night dinner. The theme this month will be “comfort,” wear whatever you please (bonus points for pajamas!) and don’t forget to tell Benjamin your favorite comfort food when you RSVP.

Space is limited – RSVP by 9pm, Wednesday October 1 to benjamin@hillel.columbia.edu.

5) Attention Jewish Writers and Artists! Avanim Submission Deadline is Approaching!

Avanim, Columbia/Barnard's Jewish literary magazine is accepting submissions for our Fall 2008 issue. We want your poetry, your prose (800 words or less, please), your photographs, your drawings, your paintings (we'll photograph them for you!) or any other type of creative expression of your Judaism.

If your submission is Jewish-themed, great! If not, send it over anyway. We are trying to create a community of Jewish artists and writers, so just know that whatever you send over will be interpreted in that light.

All submissions should be sent to avanim.magazine@gmail.com by October 12th 2008. So look through your notebooks or get inspired over Rosh Hashannah and whip up something new. We are eagerly waiting to see what you come up with.
