4) Opening Meeting of Avanim - Hillel's Literary Magazine
Do you love to write? Do you often find yourself writing about things that are close to your heart, such as your Jewish experiences or time you've spent in Israel? Do you express yourself through photography or drawing or painting?

Avanim is a Jewish publication for Columbia/Barnard/JTS students to express themselves through writing and art — a forum where Jewish writers and artists can share their work with other Jewish students, as well as with the Jewish and overall campus community.

Come on out to our first meeting of the year on Sunday, September 14th at 7:30 in Bishop Library on the second floor of the Kraft Center to discuss ways to get involved with this wonderful publication and bounce around program ideas for the upcoming semester.

Check out our latest issue at: http://www.hillel.columbia.edu/avanim2008.pdf

If you have comments or questions, or if you just want to express your enthusiasm for this exciting publication, email Aaron at agr2114@columbia.edu. Looking forward to seeing you!

5) LionPAC Advanced Israel Advocacy Seminar - First Seminar is September 14th so register soon!

LionPAC will be holding an Advanced Advocacy Seminar that will consist of four dinner sessions on Israeli History and advocacy strategies. The program will focus specifically on past, current and future advocacy skills and strategies pertaining to Columbia's campus. If you are new to Israel Advocacy, have always wanted to learn more, or want to solidify your knowledge of the region, this program is right for you. If you are interested in the seminar, please email LionPAC Academic Affairs Director Leora Kanner at lk2325@barnard.edu for more information. Admission will be limited.

6) "How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less" - Meet Comic Book Artist Sarah Glidden!

Date:  Monday, September 15, 2008
Time:  7:00pm

Location: The Kraft Center for Jewish Student Life, Room 400

Street:  606 W. 115th street, b/w Broadway and Riverside

In 2007, Sarah Glidden traveled to Israel on a Birthright-Israel tour with the intent of writing her first full-length memoir comic about the experience. She self-published the first two chapters of "How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less," after which the work was picked up by Vertigo, a subsidiary of DC Comics. The complete graphic novel will be published in 2010.

Sarah is a contributor to the forthcoming anthologies "Syncopated" and "I Saw You," both being released by Random House in Spring 2009. She draws comics based on reader experiences for MideastYouth.com, a youth-run website devoted to diversity and understanding amongst its mainly Middle Eastern readership. She has been interviewed for Heeb Magazine's online edition and gave a reading at the Stumptown Comics Festival in Portland, Oregon where she was awarded the 2008 Masie Kukoc Award for Comics Inspiration.

Come meet Sarah and learn about the process of creating a comic book!

7) Message of Condolence
In Loving Memory of Erma Thomas, Grandmother of our very own James Carroll

It is with great sadness that we let you know of the passing of Erma Thomas, deeply beloved grandmother of James, whom you may know as our night and weekend security officer.  James is not only a colleague, but a friend and an integral part of the Hillel family, and we stand with him in his time of mourning.

There will be a viewing tomorrow at the Robeson and Brown Funeral Home, 396 Gates Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11216, between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm.  The internment will be next week in North Carolina.

May James and his family find consolation, and may the memory of Erma Thomas be a blessing.

Sincerely,

Simon Klarfeld
