1) Journeys from Ethiopia: A Two-Part Series on Ethiopian Immigration to Israel and America
This two part series begins with the screening of internationally acclaimed film "Live and Become", and continues with a panel of Ethiopian immigrants to Israel.

Part 1.  "LIVE AND BECOME" Screening:

Synopsis: "Live and Become" is the magnificent, epic story of an Ethiopian boy who is airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel in 1984 during Operation Moses. Schlomo is plagued by two big secrets: He is neither a Jew nor an orphan, just an African boy who survived and wants, somehow, to fulfill his Ethiopian mother's parting request that he "go, live, and become." Buoyed by a profound and unfaltering motherly love ? both in his memory and in the arms of his adoptive mother ? he ultimately finds an identity and a happiness all his own.

THURSDAY April 3rd 7:00 pm

Rennert Auditorium

Part 2.  SPEAKERS PANEL:

Sirak Sabahat, STAR of "Live and Become"

Zion Uness, Ethiopian Immigrant to Israel

Join Arts on the Move for a rough cut screening of new documentary Four Hundred Miles to Freedom, the story of co-director Avishai Mekonen?s kidnapping by slave traffickers in Sudan, and his journey to freedom in Israel and the US. This fascinating movie explores the issue of multiple and sometimes conflicting identities throughout the Jewish community. Q&A with directors Avishai and Shari Mekonen (Columbia MFA) to follow.

Sunday April 6th, 6:00 pm

Kraft Center (across from Schapiro), 5th floor

To learn more about Arts on the Move, visit www.avodaarts.org. To learn more about the movie, visit www.fourhundredmilestofreedom.com.

5) "Paper Clips" Screening

Ever Tried to Count 11 Million?

"Paper Clips" the Documentary

7:30 PM Lerner Cinema, in Alfred Lerner Hall

Sunday, April 6th

In trying to teach a lesson about tolerance middle school students from rural Tennessee started a project to commemorate the atrocities of the Holocaust. They began to collect one paperclip for each life lost in the Holocaust. Each paperclip has a story, remembering the life of the each Jew, homosexual, gypsy, and mentally disabled person whose life was cut short. What began as an classroom lesson grew into something greater. A compelling documentary about the Holocaust and modern day tolerance.

There will be a opening remarks by Professor Midlarsky, an expert in Holocaust Studies at Teachers College who was the victim of a hate crime earlier this year.

Can't wait until Sunday? See the trailer at: http://www.paperclipsmovie.com/trailer.php

9) The Swastika: A Dual Perspective

The Swastika was once a symbol with auspicious connotations in Dharmic religions.  How did this symbol which originally had holy connotations become one of spite and hatred? For the past 70 years, Western culture has viewed the Swastika almost exclusively as a symbol of racism and hatred. How was the symbol altered by Hitler's misappropriation? Can Jews appreciate the symbol as more than a sign of hate?

Wednesday April 9, 7:00 pm. 5th floor of Hillel (115th between Broadway and Riverside, across from Schapiro)

Come to a discussion with the Hindu Students Organization and the Hillel Inter-cultural committee concerning two accounts of the Swastika. Come, learn, and have an open conversation about the dual meaning of the symbol and its place in our culture today.

Kosher Indian food will be served.
