2) Alternative Spring Break in the South: Exploring Shared Legacies of Social Justice

March 16th-23rd, 2008

The CC/SEAS Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Columbia/Barnard Hillel have partnered to provide a unique opportunity for students from all identities, cultures, and backgrounds to participate in a service learning project during Spring Break with a special focus on the intersections between People of Color and Jewish communities.  More than two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the gulf coast of the United States; the political, social and economic ramifications of this storm have been far reaching and have challenged all of us to examine issues of justice and inequality within the United States and abroad.

This intercultural service learning project is aimed at building community between Jewish Students and students of color on Columbia's campus. Through this project two delegates of students, one from the Columbia/Barnard Hillel and one from the Office of Multicultural Affairs/Intercultural Resource Center will participate in a semester long training program which will culminate in a trip to New Orleans during Spring Break to assist with the Katrina Relief Effort.   During this semester long project, students will examine the historical and contemporary significance of "social justice" within Jewish and People of Color communities, explore the legacy of the Civil Rights movement as it pertains to the relationship between these communities, and look at the political and social implications of Hurricane Katrina within this context.

Please email Maya at Maya.Lentz@Columbia.edu for an application.  Applications must be completed NO LATER THAN FRIDAY DECEMBER 7th AT 2PM.

3) Call For Artists!

Are you an artist?  Do you want to be one?

Please submit works for the Barnard/Columbia Hillel Spring 2008 Art Show: "All Actual Life is Encounter" (Martin Buber).  Submissions are due by the first week in February.  All Barnard, Columbia, JTS, TC students are encouraged to apply for this juried show!  Here's a chance to promote the arts, show off your creative side, spread diversity, and help beautify the Kraft Center!
