3) Statement from Hillel Student President
This week, Columbia's Campus was witness to another anti-Semitic hate incident. On Wednesday morning, a swastika was spray-painted on a Jewish professor's door at Teachers College. Although the door was promptly removed, the visceral effect of hateful intimidation directed at a Columbia University faculty member is not as easily forgotten.
Unfortunately, it has proven difficult to prevent acts of hate from occurring on campus. However, we must mitigate the effects of hate-crime and utilize these despicable acts as an opportunity to raise awareness and to educate the Columbia community. In the coming weeks, Hillel will be reaching out to student groups, student councils, faculty and administrators to develop programs aimed at education, and promoting an academic atmosphere of respect and tolerance. Hillel encourages all members of the Columbia community to participate in our mission of cultivating a safe and tolerant community.
